About this deal

If you don’t know anything about Oblivion – have managed to avoid the more revealing trailers and promotional material – then I strongly recommend you book yourself some tickets and go see it on the biggest screen you can find. Even more impressively though, he was prepared to bring his acting A-game too, coming absolute full circle following a career of experience as both an actor and an action star to make an all-round far better Top Gun sequel than anybody could have ever expected, far better than we would have got had they turned one around in the late 80s. Things become more complicated still when Maverick learns that one of the pilots he’s meant to train is a young lieutenant named Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his best friend and former F-14 RIO “Goose,” who died years earlier in a training accident while Maverick was at the controls.

Still, there's no denying this is one big SCRAM-jet of nostalgia-fuelled fan-service, which only Top Gun fans are really going to go ballistic for. Even on the extras front - the area where you could most obviously complain that the disc is lacking - the almost entirely Featurette-based supplementals are still all high quality, and it's telling that they are so good that you just want more. And the high dynamic range grading lends every frame a bold, vibrant immediacy that puts you right “in the box” pulling Gs with these pilots. That image clarity is exceptional, with magnificent fine detail and texturing—the word astonishing seems wholly inadequate to describe the home experience of this film. Read more about the condition New: An item that is still in its original shrink wrap from the manufacturer and the original manufacturer’s seal (if applicable) has not been removed. A high-octane spectacle, the likes of which the world has never seen before,” Top Gun: Maverick is “The perfect adrenaline rush. The disc’s glossy special features not withstanding, Top Gun: Maverick is also a demo-worthy 4K Ultra HD experience that is absolutely not to be missed.

The disc image wise is reference quality for sure, but the audio is a huge missed opportunity in my opinion.

With WCG, HDR (Dolby Vision flavoured too) at play, the distinctly stylised production looks the part too, even when trading in gorgeous burnt orange-gold low-sun shots, on the carrier, or on the beach, affording staggeringly fabulous silhouettes against the almost unreal picture postcard backdrops. Indeed, if you strip away all of that classic, nostalgic fortification fans have cast upon the rightly beloved original over the last few decades, this is comfortably the better film, and even if it may take a little longer achieve that same untouchable classic status as its forebear (its staggering Box Office landmarks have arguably given it a head-start), it'll proudly sit alongside it as an organic continuation that - much like its star - defies the lengthy passage of time to provide a perfect companion-piece to the original. The tales of production difficulties encountered by Tony Scott making the first movie echo charmingly second time around, but for very different reasons. After serving for more than 30 years as one of the Navy's best test pilots and avoiding the advancement in rank that would see him grounded, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) begins training recent Top Gun graduates for a new mission. The film moments chosen are just a few of the shots that made the audience gasp in the cinema, as you can fully see Mr Cruise is once again, DOING the flying for REAL!
