Worked examples of calculation methods are combined with useful insights into essential prior knowledge and understanding. It is clear that this book is written by a teacher for teachers and its main objective is to ensure teachers understand the concepts behind what that they teach so that children will not just learn mathematics but understand mathematics. Tried and tested, the fifth edition of Derek Haylock’s much loved textbook matches the 2014 curriculum requirements for England. Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers develops your understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, and how children learn them, so you can confidently teach mathematics to primary children.

QUESTIONS AND QUIZZES: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes. The teaching points throughout help to draw relevant links between theory and practice and the self-assessment questions focus on developing teachers’ own content and pedagogical content knowledge. Fully aligned to the primary National Curriculum for maths, Times Tables Ninja features an introduction for teachers explaining the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach and the vocabulary to use when teaching times tables.

This Student Workbook reinforces and applies concepts introduced in Derek Haylock's Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching. Easily understood for someone who didn't like maths at school and has to now teach it (and it's my favourite subject to teach! With detailed solutions, explanatory notes and tightly mapped to the main book, the Student Workbook gets students practicing what they've learnt to help build confidence. I like to recommend this for this group to help them with mathematics pedagogy in training and beyond. This user-friendly interactive book makes concepts simple and gives you the confidence and knowledge to learn and teach mathematics to primary children.

QUESTIONS AND QUIZZES: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes. He has worked as a primary teacher and as a lecturer in primary teacher education for 18 years, following an earlier career in the IT industry. LEARNING AND TEACHING POINTS: Feel confident in the classroom with these key points to remember when planning and teaching. As a student teacher this book greatly helped me as I was not very confident with maths myself and aided me to be able to feel confident teaching methods to the children.

The self-assessment tasks and suggestions for further reading should ensure that teachers feel well prepared to teach the mathematics contained in the book. As well as his publications in the field of education, he has written seven books of Christian drama for young people and a Christmas musical (published by Church House/National Society). The explanation of key terms will enable primary mathematics teachers to navigate their way through the new curriculum document. I have found this book to be interesting but not necessarily the most helpful to figure out certain methods. In the chapter ‘Written methods for Multiplication and Division’ the concepts behind the methods are explained clearly and thoroughly.
