About this deal

The ear pads slightly affect the frequency response (which we’ll get into a little later) and are wrapped in a plush velour that makes them as comfortable as they look. There were no particular areas of the frequency response that really stood out to me on the DT 1990 Pro. Head stage width is about average to slightly above average - meaning stage width reaches my shoulders and can move past it a bit. Looking at graphs, there is a dip around 4kHz - 6kHz region, which lends it better to my ears and I don't find the treble as overly sharp and fatiguing. Soundstage depth is also good, allowing even the most lackadaisical listener to pinpoint the exact location of where each instrument is playing.

Brilliant highs, a richly detailed midrange and precise bass combine to ensure a sublime sound quality that is second to none. It was not as high as on 600-series Sennheisers mind you, but it could still cause discomfort for some users. Those headphones just approach every single tune just like your CPU in a computer does calculations. The best analogy for this is that an over sharpened image does not exactly mean the camera captured the finer details of a captured shot. Given their open-back design, they fall into the airy side and give you the impression that you're actually not listening to a pair of headphones at all, which is very impressive to me. Saying this, when taking the same layered tracks over to bass heavy speaker set ups (which, let’s face it, is the majority of systems that normal people favour in this day and age), I haven’t yet found these systems to define these frequencies any better, they certainly don’t clean up the mess I have made and make it sound much better than on the DT1990. It has 250 ohms of impedance yet they are very power efficient and pretty much can be powered even with budget DAPs. Two types of velour earpads are provided offering a choice between well-balanced sound or analytical depending on your requirements.

This is why its always recommended to mainly check audio from monitor speakers or use eq passive or active eq while using the dt1990. Still, I think that amplifiers like the Liquid Spark and JDS Labs Atom will be more than enough to drive these cleanly. That said, my perceived sense of auditory space when listening to these headphones wasn’t as good as expected. In my humble opinion, and remember that I am talking about this from a “tool” point of view, the DT1990 does not invent detail, in other words, for you to be able to spot something using these headphones, it needs to be there in the first place. The ear cups are plastic on the side, with laser-cut aluminum driver covers on the face and a fine mesh metal grill beneath. But its wide frequency reproduction range and richness of detail are also reasons why these headphones are suitable for even the highest standards in the field of audio mastering. While we’re talking about the performance of the DT 1990 Pro, we should talk about its 250 ohm impedance and amp pairings. Well, I think that it is important to put into context that my history in the audio field has been much more related to live and studio terms than it has been sitting back and enjoying recorded music. is pretty penny, not gonna lie, although I think about it more as an investment because I don’t think those will break anytime soon.
